     Bullets and Shot Shell

If your a sport fisherman diver or just in the water for fun there is always that chance that Mr. Shark is eyeing you up for dinner which  is always that possibility.

Recently  two young teenagers were bitten, one fatally, in water no more than waist deep. Thirty years ago I owned and operated a charter fishing boat in the small town of Waretown, New Jersey. We fished for what ever was  running, Blues, Trout (Weakfish) and Sharks.  The movie JAWS was the big talk of the day, so quite a few people wanted to fish for shark, and there were sharks in the area.  Blue Mako, Tiger ,Dog Shark (sand shark and occasionally a Great White. 

The original  Jaws was caught  less than ninety miles at  the end of Long Island, New York, That is one of the favorite haunts for the Great White. We were trolling along with our lines out when, out of nowhere, we were hit by a school of young tuna, 40 pounders. As I was pulling one by the wire leader, a Blue Mako came and took half of the tuna with him.  Then other sharks that were following the tuna started to thrash about.

I grabbed my 30 caliber carbine and fired 12 or 13 shots at a large Tiger Shark hitting it in the head. I know I was hitting him, you could see the splashes of the bullets hitting him but he kept coming. A brain shot was like asking for the moon. I put 12 or 13 shots into him and it didn't phase him in the least, he just kept coming.  The bullets didn't have any effect on the shark because the gasses from the rifle barrel went off into space 6 feet away from the shark and not into the shark like it would from a bang stick.

Tommy, my mate, handed me my 12 gauge bang stick. The shark had a tuna in his mouth slashing back and forth. I took the bang stick, pulled the safety wire, then punched the bang stick at the spot just above the gill plates and drove it home....  blood, meat, and water spray flew everywhere, it almost cut him in half.  He  immediately stopped and sank to the bottom. It's the massive blast and the incompressibility of the water, firing like a cannon ball into the shark, that does the damage.

 You don't want the shark to swim away and die , After he eats you. - YOU WANT TO STOP HIM NOW
